# Platform Fees and Fund Splitting

> How a Clever Connect platform keeps a platform fee on each Payin and splits the rest across merchant Payments Accounts with an allocation profile.

Fund splitting lets a [Clever Connect](/platform-overview/clever-concepts/clever-connect-vs-standard) platform take its own fee on a Payin and pass the rest to one or more merchants in the same transaction. The customer pays once. Hello Clever keeps the platform fee in the Payments Account that received the Payin and moves each merchant's share into that merchant's own Payments Account.

You describe the split once, in an **allocation profile**, and reference it on every Payin you want to split.

<Note>
  Fund splitting is available to Clever Connect accounts on [Dedicated Balance](/platform-overview/clever-concepts/balance-models). Hello Clever turns it on per currency. Contact your account manager to enable it.

## Key terms

| Term | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Receiving account** | The Payments Account that receives the Payin. It keeps the platform fee and pays the Hello Clever processing fee out of it. |
| **Recipient accounts** | The Payments Accounts that receive a share of the Payin. They must be in the same currency as the Payin and cannot include the receiving account. |
| **Allocation profile** | A saved rule: the platform fee and the percentage each recipient slot receives. Each profile has one currency. |
| **Platform fee** | What the receiving account keeps: a percentage of the Payin amount plus an optional fixed amount. |

***

## How the split is calculated

<Steps>
  <Step title="Work out the platform fee">
    `platform fee = Payin amount × platform fee % + fixed platform fee`

    The fixed part is in the Payin currency.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Split what is left">
    The recipients share `Payin amount − platform fee`. Their percentages add up to 100 on their own.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pay the processing fee from the platform fee">
    The Hello Clever processing fee comes out of the platform fee kept by the receiving account. Recipients never pay a fee.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Every amount is rounded to the currency's minor unit, for example 2 decimal places for AUD and none for JPY.

### Example

A profile with a **5%** platform fee, a **2.00 AUD** fixed fee, and two recipients at **60%** and **40%**, applied to a **1,000.00 AUD** Payin:

| | Calculation | Amount (AUD) |
| - | - | - |
| Platform fee | 1,000.00 × 5% + 2.00 | 52.00 |
| Left to split | 1,000.00 − 52.00 | 948.00 |
| Recipient 1 (60%) | 948.00 × 60% | 568.80 |
| Recipient 2 (40%) | 948.00 × 40% | 379.20 |

If the processing fee for this Payin is 10.00 AUD, the receiving account is left with 42.00 AUD.

## Rules Hello Clever checks

A Payin with an allocation profile is rejected before any money moves when:

* Fund splitting is not enabled for the Payin currency, or the merchant is not on Dedicated Balance.
* The profile does not exist, is inactive, or has a different currency from the Payin.
* The number of recipient accounts does not match the profile, an account appears twice, or the receiving account is listed as a recipient.
* The platform fee is equal to or greater than the Payin amount.
* The platform fee is lower than the expected processing fee for the payment method.

See [Split Payins with platform fees](/developer-reference/api-use-cases/split-payins-with-platform-fees#errors) for the exact error messages.

***

## When the split happens

| Payment method | When the split is applied |
| - | - |
| Bank transfers, PayID, QR and other non-card methods | When the Payin is created. Each recipient's share follows the Payin status. |
| Cards | After the card is charged. The processing fee depends on the card brand and whether the card is domestic or international, so Hello Clever waits until the card details are known. |

If the customer pays less or more than the requested amount, Hello Clever recalculates the split on the amount actually received.

Card Payins move to **received** when they settle, usually the next business day. The recipient shares follow the same status as the Payin.

***

## Balances, reporting and settlement

* Each recipient share appears as its own Payin in the recipient's Payments Account, linked to the original Payin.
* The receiving account shows the original Payin with the platform fee it collected.
* Each Payments Account settles its own balance. The receiving account settles the platform fee it kept, and each recipient settles its share.

***

## Refunds

A Payin that was split can be refunded through the usual refund flow. The refund is taken from the receiving account. Recipient shares are not reversed automatically, so make sure the receiving account holds enough funds before you refund.

***

## Supported currencies

Fund splitting can be enabled for **AUD, USD, JPY, VND, ARS, IDR, INR and KES**.
