# Moving Money: Settlements and Transfers

> How money moves in Clever Connect: the difference between a Settlement and an Account Transfer, and how Settlements behave under each balance model.

Clever Connect keeps money movement simple by using two main merchant-facing terms: **Settlement** and **Account Transfer**. Knowing which one applies comes down to where the money is coming from and where it is going. This page explains the two terms, then covers how Settlements behave under each balance model.

## Settlement vs. Account Transfer

<CardGroup cols={2}>
  <Card title="Settlement" icon="arrow-up-from-bracket">
    Moves available funds **out of a Payments Account**, either to a Treasury Account or to a named external bank account. A settlement fee usually applies.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Account Transfer" icon="arrows-left-right">
    Moves funds **between your Hello Clever accounts**, or between a Treasury Account and an external account. Internal transfers do not charge a fee; external movements may.
  </Card>
</CardGroup>

The simplest way to tell them apart:

* If the source is a **Payments Account** and funds are moving out → it is a **Settlement**, even when the destination is a Treasury Account.
* If both the source and destination are **Hello Clever accounts**, and you are not settling payment proceeds → it is an **Account Transfer**.
* If the source or destination is **external** and the Hello Clever account is a **Treasury Account** → it is an **Account Transfer**.

<Note>
  Treasury Accounts are available in **AUD** and **USD**. See [supported currencies](/platform-overview/clever-concepts/treasury-accounts#supported-currencies).
</Note>

### Which term applies

| Your intent | Term |
| - | - |
| Move payment funds out | Settlement |
| Move money between your Hello Clever accounts | Account Transfer |
| Add funds to Treasury | Account Transfer |
| Withdraw Treasury funds | Account Transfer |
| Move money across currencies | Account Transfer (only from Treasury to Treasury) |

### Supported directions

Every movement has a source and a destination, and not every pairing is available. This matrix shows what you can do today:

| From | To | Term | Currency support |
| - | - | - | - |
| Payments Account | External bank account | Settlement | All currencies (Request settlement); AUD and JPY on demand via Move funds |
| Payments Account | Treasury Account | Settlement | AUD (the only live Treasury currency) |
| Payments Account | Payments Account | Account Transfer | AUD and JPY |
| Treasury Account | Payments Account | Account Transfer | AUD |
| Treasury Account | Treasury Account | Account Transfer | AUD |
| Treasury Account | External bank account | Account Transfer | AUD |
| External bank account | Payments or Treasury Account | Top-up (Deposit) | The account's own currency |

<Warning>
  **There is no automatic currency conversion.** Apart from Treasury-to-Treasury transfers, the source and the destination must hold the **same currency**. Hello Clever will not convert on your behalf mid-movement. Accounts in another currency are not offered as destinations, so if the account you expect is missing from the recipient list, check its currency first.
</Warning>

<Tip>
  Moving value between currencies takes two steps: settle or transfer into your **Treasury Account**, then make a cross-currency Treasury-to-Treasury transfer.
</Tip>

### Fees at a glance

| Movement | Fee |
| - | - |
| Settlement | Settlement fee applies |
| Internal Account Transfer | No fee |
| External Account Transfer | An external movement fee may apply |
| Cross-currency Treasury Account transfer | FX or conversion fees may apply, if configured |

<Tip>
  Fees are always shown before you confirm, so you can see the exact cost of a Settlement or external Account Transfer before it happens.
</Tip>

### How movements appear in your history

One movement can write more than one record, because both sides of an internal movement are logged:

| Movement | Records written |
| - | - |
| Settlement to an external bank account | **Settlement** against the Payments Account. |
| Settlement to a Treasury Account | **Settlement** against the Payments Account, and **Transfer In** against the Treasury Account. |
| Account Transfer between your accounts | **Transfer Out** against the source, and **Transfer In** against the destination. |

<Note>
  Two records for one movement is expected, not double counting. Each account logs only the side that affected it.
</Note>

## Movements that wait for a funding check

Hello Clever funds movements in some currencies through more than one banking partner. Where that applies, the treasury team confirms which funding sources cover your request before the money moves. The check happens inside Hello Clever, and nothing is asked of you.

It applies to **Settlements** out of a Payments Account, whether the destination is a Treasury Account or an external bank account. Top-ups and Treasury to Payments transfers are not affected today.

### What you see while the check runs

| | What happens |
| - | - |
| **Status** | Your request stays **Processing** for the whole check. No extra status appears, and there is nothing for you to approve. |
| **Balance** | The amount leaves your available balance and sits in your outgoing balance from the moment you submit, the same as any other movement. |
| **Timing** | The check adds a manual step, so a movement can take longer than the usual processing time for that currency. |
| **Transaction record** | The settlement stays a single transaction in your balance history, whichever way Hello Clever funds it. |

<Note>
  The funding check currently applies to settlements in **JPY**, **VND**, **IDR**, **INR**, **PHP**, and **MYR**. Settlements in other currencies are funded without it, **AUD** included, so an AUD settlement is never held for this check. Hello Clever expects to extend the list over time, and no action is needed from you when a currency is added.
</Note>

<Tip>
  If a settlement in one of these currencies sits in **Processing** for longer than you expect, the funding check is the usual reason. Contact Hello Clever Support with the Balance ID if you need the current position on a specific movement.

## Settlements

A Settlement moves funds out of your Clever balance. The only practical difference between the two balance models is whether you choose an account first.

### Settlements under Aggregated Balance

When you create a Settlement under [Aggregated Balance](/platform-overview/clever-concepts/balance-models):

* The amount is deducted from your single merchant balance.
* No account selection is required.

| Description | Amount |
| - | - |
| Available merchant balance | AUD 5,000 |
| Settlement request | AUD 1,000 |
| Remaining balance | AUD 4,000 |

### Settlements under Dedicated Balance

When you create a Settlement under [Dedicated Balance](/platform-overview/clever-concepts/balance-models):

* You must select an account first.
* The amount is deducted from that account’s balance only.

Settling AUD 500 from Store A:

| Description | Amount |
| - | - |
| Store A balance | AUD 2,000 |
| Settlement request | AUD 500 |
| Store A remaining balance | AUD 1,500 |

Store B’s balance is not affected and remains unchanged.

## What every confirmation shows

Whether you are settling or transferring, the confirmation screen shows the same core details so you always know exactly what will happen:

* Source account and destination account.
* Amount and currency.
* Fee, if any.
* Expected balance impact.
* A reference ID after submission, and the status after submission.
